How do you make sense of the distance formula? What activities or resources have you used with your students to investigate the why?

Actually, I don’t even teach the distance formula! We just look at it as the Pythagorean Theorem and the kids generally come up with their own methods of x2 – x1 and y2 – y1. It works extraordinarily well and uses kids prior knowledge.
